Speaking at SharePointFest Chicago 2018

I am very lucky enough to have been accepted to speak at SharePointFest Chicago for the third year running now. The subject is Automated Build and deploy of SharePoint Framework webparts.

One of the really fascinating things about working in a modern large development team is the outstanding benefits for automated testing, automated build, and automated deployment. Even for something which might not on the surface seem to be a “big deal” such as SPFx webpart development, has many advantages to be gained by using a professional automated development environment.

Since I submitted and was accepted to speak, VSTS has been renamed to Azure DevOps, so this might be difficult to pull off as a topic – but i think we will be ok 😉

SharePointFest is always  alot of fun with a good crowd of speakers and attendees. I am excited to attend and excited to speak 🙂

DEV304 – Using VSTS to automate build and deployment tasks for SharePoint Framework webparts

Working on your own and building SharePoint Framework webparts is one thing, but when you have to work in a team on a larger project, the team approach to development has to be more structured and automated.

Modern team web development practices demand the use of unit tests, load testing and automated build and deploy methodologies. Why should developing for the Sharepoint framework be any different?

In this presentation Mark will highlight the advantages to using VSTS to create and manage and continuous build and deploy process for working with the Sharepoint Framework. Come and see how modern team development techniques can be applied to SPFx.

Speaking at SharePoint Chicago Dec 2017

I will be speaking at the 2017 SharePointFest Chicago conference December 8th, at McCormick Place, Chicago.

I will be talking about how O365 adoption can be made easier by having and internal emerging technologies team try and solve some simple business problems and lead to a broader adoption of the platform within an organization.

This will be the third time I have spoken about “the Labs team” this year and I am really honored to be able to speak at SharePointFest again this year 🙂

BV 205 – Enabling O365 adoption from within – How an emerging technologies team can make a big difference

Too often when an organization makes major technology shifts, it is often not the technology change which causes problems, it’s the people and how they adapt to change. While we often associated this to end users, the same is just as true for developers. If we want to retain our best development talent then we have to give them a part in the transition. Allow them to understand it and own it.

With so many new technologies and capabilities being exposed within Office 365 and Azure, many business are frankly overwhelmed with the possibilities and often fall back on the bare minimum of mail, calendaring and SharePoint. This talk will demonstrate cost effective measures to keep developers engaged while providing benefit to the company in a mutually beneficial manner.

An internal research and development team can create a sustainable balance of creative knowledge growth for the individual, matched with a method to future proof the overall organization. How changes in technology affect the success of a company need to be understood, managed and the effects managed. With the unrestrained freedom to explore emerging technologies and without the constraints of today’s corporate development policies your best talent can achieve great things, stay engaged, and more importantly stay.

In this presentation Mark will discuss and demonstrate how a creative “labs” team can lead to short, medium and long term benefits for any business willing to invest in people and technology.

Title
DEV 103 – Office 365 Add-Ins: A web developer’s playground

Abstract
Like most office workers, we all spend a significant amount of time in our “Microsoft Office” productivity tools. Even email is still a productivity tool. Productivity starts to diminish though if we have to move outside of our Office environment and hunt for information and/or complete business workflow processes.

With the creation of Office 365 Add-Ins, Microsoft has presented web developers with a new opportunity to create rich, engaging and integrated user experiences without having to leave the “experience” of our Office applications. Developers have the ability to create Add-Ins using HTML/JS/CSS and these run in the Windows Client, on the web, on our phones and even on the OS X desktop client.

In this presentation Mark will provide lots of demonstrations of how to get started with Office Add-Ins. These will include: creating your first Add-In in under 2 minutes, how to simplify workflow approval without having to leave your email client, how to pull report and analytics data into your Office product suite applications, integrating SharePoint as a Service, integration with Salesforce and how to integrate your content with cognitive analytics.

Come to the presentation and find out why Office 365 Add-Ins are a modern web developers playground.
